Gucci Authenticity Check: How to Tell if It’s a Real Gucci Purse vs a Fake Gucci Handbag
1. View the Bag for Fake Gucci Details

For Gucci purses sold on Ebay or via other online retailers, look for closeup pictures of the GG logo.

Look for a leather tab with the style/ serial number imprinted on the back of the tab and the words “Gucci Made in Italy†located inside the bag.

2. Examine the Sales Receipt
If there are no closeup pictures, ask the seller for the original receipt. Although receipts can be fabricated, the sales associates number and the date of purchase cannot.

If it is a second-hand Gucci bag, call the store where the original purse was sold to verify the purchase.

3. Look for Inferior Quality Zippers, Hardware, and Clasps
Gucci bags use thick and sturdy brass hardware in the construction of their purses. Inspect the back of the YKK zipper.

Examine the fake bag for the use of cheap plastic zippers instead of sturdy metal YKK zippers. If the handbag’s clasps are hard to fasten, the bag is fake.

4. Check the Handbag’s Materials
Â
Every real Gucci handbag, purse, or backpack is constructed from the finest materials: leathers, suedes, patent leather, and canvas.
Â
The stitching on the outside seams of the bag should be uniform, and the bag should feel soft and supple to the touch.
Â
5. View the Handbag’s Lining
The inside lining of a bag is a good indicator of overall quality. If you see a purse lined in plastic-looking or wrinkly fabric that bunches at the seams, it is not a Gucci product.

6. Ask for the Gucci Dust Bag
Real Gucci products are sold with two types of dust bags.

The dust bag will have the double G logo or have the name “Gucci†written in gold lettering across the front of the bag.

If the bag is wrapped in plastic, it is not authentic.

7. Look for the “Controllato†Card

Gucci has a control system that ensures that all bag purchased by Gucci customers are authentic. Each handbag is sold with a controllato card ( which is the Italian word for checked.)
Each card has the words “Gucci†centered on the card in all capital letters. Underneath the card, the words “controllato†are displayed in lowercase letters.

8. Check the Seams for Faulty Stitching
An authentic Gucci purse will feature even seams along the sides and bottom of the bag. A real Gucci will not pucker at the seams or have threads dangling off the bag.

9. Look for a Gucci Bag Serial Number

Do all Gucci bags have serial numbers? Yes, they do!
Â
Based on the age of the bag, Gucci uses 10-12 numbers in the two rows — with no more than six numbers in each row.  It is also common to have the same supplier/vendor code for more than one bag.

Here’s how to determine what the numbers on the back of the leather tag mean:
- The first six numbers in the top row indicate the style number. In the picture above, my Gucci Black Perforated Leather Reins Hobo Bag has a style number of 114869.
- The second row of numbers is the supplier code. The bottom six digits represent the particular factory where the leather goods were manufactured.

Tell-Tale Signs of a Fake Gucci Handbag, Purse or Wallet
- Stitching is crooked and uneven–on the inner seams and the handbag’s edges.
- Gucci does not wrap their handbags in plastic.
- No dust bag with the double “GG†logo or with the name “Gucci†written in gold across the front of the bag? The bag is a fake.

Thanks for contacting Baghandbag! Typically the serial and style numbers on the same type of Gucci bag are the same. So if you see the same bag that you bought listed on Poshmark, with a different serial number. Return it; it’s fake.
I understand that the top number should be the same (that’s the model number, right?). But shouldn’t the bottom number be unique to each bag of that model?

Thanks for your question. The top number and the bottom number on the back of the Gucci tag should be the same, on every single bag Gucci produces for that season. It should not be unique to the bag. For example, if you are buying a black Gucci Soho bag, the two rows of numbers will be the same on every Soho bag sold that season, from that particular batch of Gucci products. To authenticate the bag yourself, do a quick Google search of the serial number or the model number. The authentic bag will show in Google Images and on GUCCI.com of a similar bag. Most importantly, always remember, Gucci serial numbers are not unique.

Hi. I’ve bought a lovely used bag, the first six numbers on the inside tag are 181084. That matches the pictures online. The numbers are straight and neat. It has a hard credit style card with it, the zips are metal and good quality (the leather zip tag may have something written on it or just a faint pattern, I can’t tell…), the lining is thick dark brown heavy cotton and all the stitching is excellent., although lighter brown than some examples I’ve seen online. The only thing concerning me is that the binding around the top of the bag opening appears to be dark brown synthetic material. Is that likely? Could you also say how old it might be please?

I don’t own a Gucci Signature Zip around, but I do have two Gucci Soho zippered wallets. The Gucci letters, made in Italy and the R trademark symbol on the lower left side of the credit card pocket is a sign of authenticity. So, I am sure that this part of the wallet is real. I know that the inside of the zipper has a leather pull tab without any Gucci lettering on the back of the tab. And the back of the YKK zipper should have the words GUCCI imprinted without the R trademark symbol. But as far as the cursive writing on the bottom of the zipper, I’d have to see an image of the outside zipper to be sure.

If so, this bag might not have a leather tag with the serial number imprinted on it because it is considered a wallet with a chain, and not a purse. None of my Gucci wallets have any serial numbers in them, so this is my best, educated guess without seeing the bag. If you are looking to sell the wallet/purse, take as many pictures as you can to help the buyer feel comfortable with their purchase, especially if you don’t have a copy of the receipt or the original Gucci box or price tag that was sold with the bag.

I found a Gucci bag at a thrift shop (crazy) and I do believe it’s real. I’ve tried to search online but I only find the bag from an eBay Japan post, and not the same exterior.
It’s a dark brown tote/shopper. Unlined. The stitching, font, zips, all look excellent. There is a zip pocket along the bottom of the bag that’s very subtle, looks like a seam but is a zip. There is a leather tie that is threaded through near the top and has silver hardware at the ends. Very subtle.
The tag numbers are:

It folds flat and I seriously love it.

Also, there wasn’t an imprint of the Gucci logo on the leather tag, and the Gucci logo wasn’t printed anywhere on the hardware. By looking for these three tell-tale signs of authenticity, it helped me determine that the bag was a fake.
Hi there I have scoured the web for information on a Gucci Pelham in metallic blue trim…I have found nothing. I did see a Sukey with the exact color but still not for the Pelham. The serial number is for the Pelham I have, it reads 223955 (top row) and then 9761 (bottom row). I am fairly familiar with Gucci and think this to be authentic but would like to know your opinion as I have yet to see one in Metallic Blue with monogram GG fabric.

Unfortunately, I think this bag is a fake. Without seeing a picture of the bag, or determining it’s price, I still believe that it is a replica. Don’t buy it!
Here’s why:
I don’t see an authentic Gucci Bloom Purse with this style number on Gucci.com. (The gucci bloom style is not vintage, so the authentic style and serial numbers should be readily available on the internet.)
The first set of numbers you provided (409527) refer to a Gucci top handle or doctor’s shape bag. So if you are not purchasing a top-handled purse, this could be a fake. Also, The last four digits you provided aren’t identical to the last 4 digits of the Gucci bloom purses on the GUCCI site.

The number of digits on Gucci purses varies between 10 and 13. So your bag fits the proper number of digits. The placement of the numbers vary on the purses, depending on the style of bag, the collection and the season in which the bag was produced. I’m thinking that your Gucci bag is vintage because the numbers are imprinted on one row. But I can’t tell for sure, without seeing a picture of the purse.

Thanks for your comments. I own a Vintage Web Original GG Boston bag, and the inside zipper is a metal zipper with a leather handle. The R in a circle, or the registered trademark sign, is located on the top of the GUCCI logo imprinted on the leather tag. The zipper should look identical to the zipper on the top of your bag, leather Boston satchel; but much smaller.
I’ll upload new pictures of my Boston Bag to this post so you can see the zippers, inside and outside of the bag.
Hi, I was looking at the GUCCI website online and zoomed into the stitching and noticed that some stitechs were shorter or long than other on the bag? Do not all authentic bags have perfect stitching?
I own 10 Gucci bags, and I’ve never seen a crooked stitch on any of my purses. But it is hard to tell if the stitches are ideally in a straight line when you are looking at a photo on GUCCI.com. Without seeing the same photo and the type of bag, I can’t tell for sure. But if you respond with the name of the bag, I can look at the photo to see if the stitching on this bag is slightly askew.

Call Nordstrom customer service. I’ve had a few issues with deliveries from their store, and the Nordstrom customer service people are excellent. Give them a call and explain your problem with the delivery and your question about the bag’s authenticity. Your Gucci could be a store return, that was reshipped to you without the original Gucci box and packaging.

I picked up a second hand Gucci Bum Bag/ Fanny Pack/ waist bag. It is beige with the Gucci web, red leather flaps on one side. Red and green strap, metal fittings. Under the larger red flap is velcro, under the smaller is a zip, though nylon. Stitching is perfect on entire bag, the lining is has Gucci all over it on an angel, both right way up and upside down. Gucci Made in Italy stamped into the leather of the larger flap and the metal clip. I was wonder if it is real or fake.

Thanks for your question. Unfortunately, I think the bag is a fake. Two big problems:no serial numbers listed on the large flap inside of the bag and the use of Velcro. I’m a big Gucci collector and I’ve never seen Velcro used as a closure in an authentic Gucci bag. If you can return the handbag, please do it now!

There’s no reason not to do your due diligence before you purchase this pricey, yet beautiful bag. Also, the price of the shoulder bag that the seller is asking for will give you distinct clues to its authenticity. As far as the lower number having four digits, this is common in the newer bags such as this GG Supreme tote: https://www.gucci.com/us/en/pr/women/womens-handbags/womens-shoulder-bags/gg-supreme-tote-p-415721KLQHG8526 . As you can see, its style number is Style 415721 and its lower number is 9784. Because counterfeiters can copy Gucci’s serial and style numbers, I would have to see images of the purse, the handles, hardware and the leather tag inside the bag, to be sure that it is real. Hopefully, you can return it, before the store’s deadline if you think the purse if fake.
